Combos
You can't press just ONE button!
Overview
Both protagonists have two attacks; Light and Heavy. By alternating between them, the player can use different combo attacks; attacks exclusively accessed by their combo.
Combos are separated into 5 different categories, depending on what attack initiates the combo, whether it's in the air, et cetra. This is only to organize them, and does not directly affect their attributes. The categories are Light, Heavy, Aerial, Special, and Power.
Combos are also generally stronger depending on how many attacks they contain; while they don't outright increase damage (most of them, anyway), they instead offer increasingly better size, speed, and multihitting than simpler combos. Combo attacks will use the damage of the attack that initiated them; for example, a Heavy combo uses the same amount of damage a ( Y ) attack would inflict through the whole combo.
Combos are unlocked every 1st and 2nd level, with the player able to choose 1 combo from any category on either character. Certain combos-- notably all Power combos-- cannot be learned via this method, however, and are instead unlocked via story progression or by spending Soul Gems on Soul.
Categories
Light
Light combos are grounded combos that start with ( X ). Generally, they are meant for attacking groups of enemies, not single targets. They will generally attack in a wide range and/or multiple times.
Heavy
Heavy combos are grounded combos that start with ( Y ). They are generally used for dealing lots of damage to a single target or a small group of heavier targets. They consist of strong attacks with small or limited ranges.
Aerial
Aerial combos are, surprisingly, combos that only work in the air. These are specifically meant to pair with combos that knock enemies into the air, allowing for further damage without being interrupted.
Special
Special combos are unique combos that require specific circumstances, such as dodging or being knocked down. They are meant to give the player more options during a fight.
Power
Power combos are combos that end with an ability button (( LT ) or ( RT )). Uniquely, power combos sometimes don't even start with either attack button. They are powerful combos unlocked via the previously mentioned methods, and are wildcards with various uses. The final attack requires SP to perform, done in percentages of your current SP (e.g. requires 20% of the player's current SP). Note that this is not 20% of the MAX SP, only 20% of the amount the player currently possesses.
